The Mainsheet - December 2021

COMMODORE’S COMMENTS
Fellow Members, as we look back on 2021 there we have a great deal to be thankful for. Although we were presented with many challenges, our resilience shined through. As your 2021 Commodore, it was my goal to improve the clubhouse, bring in new members and take steps towards a more streamlined checkout process for our club boat Piper. I can proudly say that we took giant steps with all of these. We unearthed many of our club's memorabilia which had been stored in boxes for a decade. These plaques and trophies are now proudly displayed in our clubhouse.

I want to recognize a few members for their special contributions: Angie Frausto for reviving the Mainsheet. Dan Decesare for his continued dedication to Piper and getting her ready for our members to sail. Todd Turner continues to be our rock star PRO on Race Committee. Dave Gorney was instrumental in solidifying our Bylaws update and ratification. Linnea Von Wissman stepped up as interim Secretary when we so desperately needed her. And of course there is our Treasurer Marshall Murphy who re-negotiated our lease agreement and was integral in the implementation of our bar's new POS system.

In December we can look forward to the Parade of Lights, scheduled in our harbor for Saturday December 11th. Our clubhouse will be open for drinks. Then on December 18, we have our General Meeting and Annual Christmas Potluck Dinner.

Thank you for your support this year and I look forward to a prosperous 2022 as we continue to grow our club and uphold our racing tradition.

RACE COMMITTEE REPORT

Good Morning Racers:

It's another beautiful day. Thank you all for participating in the 2021 Two Harbors Fall Series. AnYC ran Race #1 and the wind cooperated for a great race day. PBYC ran Races #2 & 3 and the wind was somewhere else. In Race #2 only 2 boats finished. The wind for the final race was very light again but the fleet managed to negotiate the 5.3 nmile course with only 2 DNFs. Series winners were the 2 boats that finished race #2. RIVAL was 1st overall in the Spinnaker Class with 3 firsts. CHUBASCO was 1st overall in the Non-spinnaker Class. Please see the attached results.

Happy Holidays and see you on the water in 2022.

CRUISING COMMENTS

Didn’t have much going on cruising-wise this month with the Santa Anna winds. Would anyone be interested in a New Years overnighter at the islands? Let me know, we (Angie and I) have discussed it and weather permitting it might be a fun idea. Please let me know. Mike at icnugram@aol.com

DID YOU KNOW?

Christmas is coming up and it’s always difficult to get a really cool gift for a sailor. There Is currently a book out called Boat owner’s Mechanical and Electrical Manual 5th edition by Nigel Calder. If you can’t find the technical answer/solution to a problem in it,  it probably doesn’t exist. If you don’t have anyone to buy it, buy it for yourself, you won’t regret it. I strongly urge any boater, race, cruise or power to get a copy, it will save your butt many times over.

Happy Holidays

Michael Gram, AYC Cruising Chair, SV Compass Rose/ Chubasco

We at the Main Sheet would welcome any “Did You Know?” articles that you would like to share.

PIPER UPDATE

Our wet-Wednesday workhorse, Piper has been cared for, bottom antifouling paint job done, anchor replacement, plus other minor repairs in addition to a competency checklist with a group of trained competency assessors she is ready for the coming year. Thanks to all of our dedicated club members who helped out during trying times this year. Michael and Jeff will be putting together the parts necessary for the holding tank upgrade on Piper. Also with Wes Mark back on, our club will end the year positioned for a great new year!
