The Mainsheet - March 2022

COMMODORE’S COMMENTS
I am so pleased and grateful for all that have renewed their membership and are back on deck with AYC. We have also welcomed a few new members and continued to attract excellent leadership from the Bridge and Board.

The past month has been a good indication that the members are ready to continue our self help club attitude. The camaraderie and joy that accompanies each accomplishment is very special. The Dinners have been yummy and let’s not forget how much fun the Super Bowl Party was. A big thank you to all that made it their job to help the club in this way!

The nautical library is near completion and is planned to be operational by Opening Day. I encourage you to lend a hand with readying the club for what promises to be a grand 55th Opening Day.  If you have any ideas or time to help, please share in this effort. We have been asked to provide a turn boat for the boat parade and I would ask a volunteer to contact our Rear Commodore, Michael, to commit for this role. Please ready your boats and burgees for a big showing in the Parade.

In addition to planning for Opening Day we are working for the upcoming racing season. Our first club race this year is the St Patrick’s Day Race. Let’s entice all racers by showing a superb race program.

Please send in written articles and/or photos for possible posting in The Mainsheet and our other communications. Thank you for your continued support.

FROM THE VICE COMMODORE

I’ll come out and say it: I feel as if I casted off the dock lines and sailed into a gale, but in the best way possible!

We have a lot to talk about. April brings the Wet Wednesday Series and Opening Day. Both of these are volunteer intensive activities. We will need to schedule help for Opening Day Festivities and for meals following Wet Wednesdays. Please expect a phone call from me. I’m at the helm and calling, “All Hands!” One of the things that I love about AYC is the fact that we are member driven club that looks to its members to get things done.

I am looking forward to the next year of service to AYC. I would like to begin a monthly event, open to guests, that address topics of interest to the sailing community. With Young Geitzen’s help, we will be scheduling a workshop on maintenance of Diesel Engines (either April or May, date TBA). I will also be scheduling movie night, time for us to gather and enjoy a sailing themed film.

We still need several more subscriptions for the YouTube site.  Go visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0oft_xghoo, and click on the SUBSCRIBE button.

Looking forward to a great Opening Day and having an outstanding Wet Wednesday Series!

Pablo Crandall Plasencia, AYC Vice Commodore

THE REAR COMMODORE REPORTS

Opening Day for AYC will be April 3rd this year. One of the high points is the individual yacht clubs parade around the harbor, two laps under power flying our AYC burgee. We are certainly not the biggest club in the area but I think we have the best boats as well as the best sailors so let’s show our numbers and dedication to the boating community. PLEASE come out and support your club  with about one hour of your time. Parade will start at 8:30 AM with opening day ceremonies to follow at the club. Please contact me and so I can get you on the list. rearcommodore@anacapayachtclub.org.

Racing and Cruising

AYC has a full season of racing and cruising planned for this season. St. Patrick’s day race is coming up on March 19th followed by Anacapa anyway April 16, Anacapa to port May 7 and Wes Goldman/Anacapa to starboard August 27. Keep up on all the races on the AYC Main Sheet at Anacapayachtclub.org. Wet Wednesdays will start April 6, S.I and NOR will be out, burgers, drinks and awards at the club after.

RACE COMMITTEE needs volunteers to help, you don’t need to be a racer to enjoy the fun and excitement. If you would like to get involved in a time honored racing tradition let me know, rearcommodore@anacapayachtclub.org.

Thanks to all,

Michael Gram, AYC Rear Commodore

When Anchoring is a Drag

You are the first to anchor in a nice quiet cove, wind 5 knots, three to one scope, all chain, bow only. Another boat arrives, and anchors bow only outside your ark of swing. Later that evening the wind increases to 15 and you increase your scope to five to one. He is now in your ark of swing and there is contact between the boats damaging both bow and stern pulpits. Who is at fault? Read on, here’s what maritime law says.

PBYC Spring Series

Dave Boatner’s J-35, Rival and Dave Trude’s Zap 26 were winners Saturday, February 12, in the first race of Pierpont Bay Yacht Club’s Spring Series. Both spinnaker classes sailed a 16.1 mile Course. The course for non-spinnaker boats was 13.1 miles, but no boats finished.

Results:

Spinnaker A: 1—Rival, Dave Boatner, 3:13:45; 2—Uhambo, Dave Chase & Carlos Brea, 3:20:58; dnf—Cirrus and No Compromise.

Spinnaker B: 1—Mighty Gumbercules, Dave Trude, 3:50:16; dnf—Risa, Wailani, Mad Dog, Capri Sun.

Non-spinnaker: dnf—Velero, Chubasco.

Mary Crandall Plasencia —Our newest Director on the Board
Rest A While was my father’s Cal 25. She sailed out of Long Beach and, with friends and family, campaigned Wet Wednesdays, was our escape to Fourth of July Cove on Catalina Island, and was my introduction to sailing. Growing up in Seal Beach, I was bathed in the rhythms of wind and tide and came to love the ocean. As a child and a young adult sailing and diving were passions. As an adult, married with children, the opportunities to sail ebbed like a tide. While I lived by the shore the demands of child rearing and work conspired to keep me on land.

When I learned that Pablo loved sailing, I suggested that we buy a sailboat and that we rekindle our love of sailing. Soon we had begun the process of finding a boat. We purchased an Ericson 39, Tiburón, moved on board, and began the new chapter of our life together. Pablo and I began to hone our skills on our Ranger 26, Kanani. We began to sail our Ericson to the islands and began to fall back in love with sailing. With Pablo’s encouragement, I have rediscovered

skills that I had learned years ago. I have grown to love singlehanding both boats and racing.

Anacapa Yacht Club was the next logical step in my development as a sailor. I love the camaraderie of the club and that it is a member driven organization. I look forward to campaigning Kanani in Wet Wednesdays. I would love to see social opportunities, such as movie nights, expanded. I will work to expand educational opportunities for our membership. As a Director, I look forward to helping to ensure the future of AYC as a sailing club. I am a believer in being involved and extending opportunities to all of our members to be part of the crew that has made AYC a great organization.
