COMMODORE’S COMMENTS

Dear Members,

As Spring has sprung and we are well under way of Summer the racing and cruising are the highlights. The time of vacationing has returned to the norm and we will see people come back to the water. Friends are coming out and sharing the spirit that makes us the tried and true Anacapa Yacht Club.

The Wet Wednesday racing is the best reason for the barbecue and social afterwards. As attendance continues to climb we are in need of volunteers. Please lend a hand at least a few hours on the Wednesday of your choice. Dinners and other meetings could also use volunteers. Please contact Vice Commodore, Pablo for scheduling.

We are planning to have a program that will highlight the Channel Islands and will generate cruising activities. You will receive email information as it unfolds so please keep an eye out for it.

As the sailing season continues it is evident that our membership and activities will see a healthy increase. I look forward to sharing the fun and excitement with you.

THE REAR COMMODORE REPORTS

Anacapa Yacht Club, Then and Now

AYC was formed in 1967 as the third Club in the Ventura area. Its mission was to promote yacht racing for enthusiastic sailors who wanted more than a great dining experience.

It was time for a new flavor of club that catered to sailboat racers with only moderate means to satisfy their passion for the ocean. Centered on that value, AYC under the guidance of its first commodore, Tom Bissette owner of a Santana 36 named “Rosanante “ helped the many members enjoy the sport by scheduling local races that welcomed the “middle class sailor. Forming a not for profit club made it less expensive and a more realistic avenue to enjoying the sport from hard core ocean racing to dingy sailing in the harbor.  AYC offered it all, its membership growing to over one hundred. It was this small yacht club based on family values, camaraderie and fun at an affordable price that brought out some of the finest sailors in the area.

Today yacht clubs have been forced to deal with many external issues like Covid and inflation. At AYC all of its members volunteer to help with scheduled events, from race committee to social gatherings. One example was during the Covid crunch, while following the guidelines of the state and county requirements, AYC was able to continue Wet Wednesday Racing events. Meeting at the Club afterwards, with plenty of social distance in the patio, masking and vaccinations. The burgers were still as tasty and the awards ceremony just as fun.

Having members help perform the daily activities has enabled the club to successfully navigate the challenges that made it very difficult for other clubs to handle.

Due to the dedication and love for the sport by its members, AYC has been able to grow and thrive in the face of adversity. It is true family club where members respect each other and their individual abilities. From “can anyone help me fix my out board” to “can you show me a better way to douse my spinnaker” members take a personal approach to helping the club. Membership, it’s family continues, to grow.

The Emerging Classie (class c) Boats

As the 2022 Wet Wednesday races take form an interesting and fun turn of events has begun to take form, as it turns out class “C” is being attended by many boats with the same or very close handicaps. This gives the group a taste of class racing. Racing boat for boat, tacks and dueling it out in close quarters makes for lots of fun.

Thanks to the following Class C boaters for their commitment.

SO LONG, RUNAWAY, IRRA, CHUBASCO, SLOW POKE, KANANI, WOJO, SPIT DOG and CAPRI SUN, good to see you out there.

I hear there may be more to come, it’ll be fun to C!

FROM RACE COMMITTEE

Wet Wednesday races have been going smoothly. The first half of May started out very windy. I've noticed there are far less sailors that come out to compete in heavy winds. Remember, Wet Wednesdays are for practicing your skills and having fun. So reef that main, put on the smallest jib you have and build your confidence!

The second Island series was on 5-7-22 with a forecast of 20+ kts out at the Islands. So we decided to use the alternate course options for A and B fleet.

Island Series Race #2 5/7/22

Class A

Cirrus 39 11:00:00 14:00:20 3:21:52 2:49:17 1

No Comp 72 11:00:00 14:19:12 3:21:57 2:58:48 2

Class B

Velero 236 11:05:00 12:48:55 1:43:55 1:08:31 1

On 5-11-22 W.W. had winds just below 20 kts and only 2 boats showed up to race, No Comp and Aya Sophia.

On 5-18-22 W.W. The winds finally calmed down and we had 9 boats show up to race.

Six A fleet boats took course 3. First place Cirrus, 2nd place No Comp, and 3rd place for Lickety Split. B fleet three boats on course 3. First place Mad Dog, 2nd place Bandaloop, and 3rd place Camp David.

On 5-25-22 W.W. 16 boats came out to race, the winds were from the south and we got to go around  Hueneme Buoy for the first time this year! Please follow this link for the complete racing results.
