The Mainsheet - November 2022

COMMODORE’S COMMENTS

The month of November greets us with good news for 2023 at AYC! Fellow Members, thanks to all who attended the Annual Membership Meeting or participated virtually with Google Meet. We have met all challenges and made progress this year with clubhouse improvements, racing and cruising enrichment opportunities plus with great new memberships. My thanks to all who contributed and continue to participate in making AYC the best that we can be. I am very pleased to announce the 2023 AYC Bridge and Board:

Commodore - Pablo Crandall Plasencia

Vice Commodore - Matt Speicher

Rear Commodore - Marshall Murphy

Jr Staff Commodore - Angie Frausto Gram

Treasurer - Mary Crandall Plasencia

Boardmembers: Jeff Birdt, Dominic Cortese, Dan DeCesare, Gary Goodman, Cherry Speicher, Mike Taylor

The 2022 Board and Bridge is still at work moving your club forward. Last meeting, a motion was made that AYC be released from further financial responsibility of Piper due to budgetary constraints. After discussing the options available to AYC and ASF, the Board voted that AYC and ASF would explore the sale, donation or other disposition of Piper. Additionally, the Board appointed Bar Manager Cherry Speicher to explore fundraising to pay for Piper’s expenses. The results of the fundraising must total $4,000 by March 1, 2023. At that time, AYC’s continued use of Piper will be determined.

Treasurer Marshall Murphy presented the Treasurer’s Report. A discussion followed regarding raising membership dues and the Board voted that effective January 1, 2023, regular membership dues would be $635 per year and the one-time Membership Fee was raised to $75. The Affiliate and Junior membership dues will be adjusted by the 10 % increase as well. So if you have any friends wanting to join, please advise them that now a membership for all next year plus the rest of this year, can be had for this year’s price!

You asked for a longer wet Wednesday season?  You got it! For the ASBCYC Sail Racing Calendar 2023 the Board voted to set the 2023 Wet Wednesday schedule for April 5th through September 27th. OPENING DAY IS 4/2/2023, CANT WAIT!!!

Members are taking our club presence to so many activities. Just recently to Catalina Buchaneer Days, Two Harbors Fall Series, AYC Open House/Channel Islands Harbor Parade of Frights, CIYC Lady at the Helm, and the Baja Ha Ha. Let’s encourage each other in the fun and momentum.

In November we can look forward to our Thanksgiving Potluck (11/19) and Monday Night Football hosted by Joleen Darland. There is still plenty to do on the water, take advantage of some great seasonal windows for island cruising and the 3rd and final race of 2022's Two Harbor Fall Series.  Anacapa Yacht Club is running the race on Saturday, November 12th.  It is also a great time to prepare for the Parade of Lights, scheduled in our harbor for 7 p.m. on Saturday, December 10th. This year’s theme is “Let It Glow.” We ask that those of you who want to help dress-up club boat, Piper or submit your boat on behalf of AYC announce it so we can help you. It will be memorable!
Of course, we will begin December with the traditional Christmas Potluck(12/3), complete with white elephant gift exchange and collecting toys for underprivileged boys and girls. Let’s keep going strong as the Holiday Season gives us the opportunity to share our joy. Thank you for your participation, and support. Cheers!

OPEN HOUSE /PARADE OF FRIGHTS

An open house for AYC was held Saturday October 28. Angie tended the bar while Mike did the meet and greet.

With the help of Julia Cushman candy was at the ready for the trick-or-treaters as well as face painting for kids was provided by artist Rachel Dexter. "Bar Favorites”, Bloody Marys and Mimosas were featured. Visitors were greeted to our AYC hospitality and interested guests were provided with membership applications.

There was an array of halloween decorations plus electric powered witch at the door with her glowing eyes and crystal ball inviting passers-by to come in and enjoy our club. All had a good time. Special thanks to Chuck Manley for doing a turn at the bar allowing Angie and Mike to participate in the Fright Night parade.

The first Channel Islands “Fright Night” took place Saturday, October 28th. It is very similar to the Parade of Light event that takes place in the harbor every December.

It began with a 3:00 pm skippers meeting at the Coast Gard Station with all the boats starting off of F dock Channel Islands Marina at 6:00 PM. In all there was about 60 watercraft participating in the event decked out in their Halloween best circling the harbor.

One of the Anacapa Yacht Club participants in the event, Chubasco sporting an eight foot witch that was electrically powered with eyes an a crystal ball that glowed, spouting curses and spells to the large audiences lining the shore, a good time was had by all.

Plan is this event will be held annually and promises to be a real crowd pleaser.
