The Mainsheet - October 2022

COMMODORE’S COMMENTS

Well Folks,

AYC’s Wet Wednesday 2022 session finished with the traditional Pirate Day revelry. Thanks to all the great pirates that came out for the exceptional fun! The best best pirate at the contest, our bartender Matt, received an excellent rum prize. We had a full house with outstanding atmosphere, food and drink! There’s a rumor that the season for 2023 may be extended. Please let the board know your thoughts.

For the rest of this year racing continues with the Two Harbors Fall Series set to begin October 8, 2022. Of the three races AYC will host the 1st and 3rd, with PBYC hosting the 2nd race. Please check Regatta Network for information if you wish to register for one or more races in the series. www.regattanetwork.com/event/25332

In addition Sunday October 16, 2022 we have the 21st Caregivers Sailathon. Let’s keep the Ugly Fish Trophy again this year for best club participation. Please see below for ways to get involved. This is certainly a worthy community service event!

September was the last General Meeting for the year where nominations for the 2023 Bridge and Board were presented to the membership. Thank you to all that agreed to run for election of these positions. Please remember that you have until October 18th to nominate yourself or someone who is also interested in serving for any of these positions to contact the Secretary. We also have appointed positions and if your interest is there please let us know directly. As Commodore I will move to the position of Jr Staff Commodore and assist with a smooth transition for the new officers. Votes will be collected and tallied by the October 28th Annual Meeting. Please update any email changes with AYC and look for your ballot in your email. For those that require another way of delivery please contact our Secretary.

Warm fun!

Our Anacapa Yacht Club Bar Manager has transformed the bar experience and makes all the difference with such positive creativity.

Lots of fun is being had at the bar lately! First off, a big thank you to Randy Alcorn and Trish

Castanon for an amazing Oktoberfest dinner! It was both a record-breaking night for dinner

sales and the bar! For those of you who could not be there, Randy and Trish made some

amazing brats, potato salad, cabbage, and sauerkraut! At the bar we served giant steins of

Oktoberfest Ale from Poseidon brewery and tapped the keg before the party was even over!

Prost!

A new firepit has been added to the back patio for the upcoming chilly fall evenings at the

Harbor, along with a new “FireCider” specialty drink to help keep your inside warm as well! The

patio has been an ongoing project and is finally starting to take shape. New market lights have

been put up, garden boxes installed, and new seats are now available in the sunshine with our

harbor view. Not only have our club members noticed, but many neighbors and passersby also

seem to be enjoying the newly decorated area. Over the past few weeks we’ve had interested

parties popping by asking “Have you guys always been here?” With the additional fan fair, we

hope to entice even more new members.

Speaking of exciting new things, the “Helmsman of the Alehouse”/New Bartender program is

off and running. Members can now access the bar simply by taking an online course/exam and

having a brief training session at the bar. The Online Course is given by the Department of

Alcohol and Beverage Control to satisfy our liquor license requirements, and the training

session is to provide all our bartenders with the tools and training needed to host any dinner or

event. For more information take a look at a brief overview here:

And on that note…the bar would like to welcome it’s newest bartender our very own

Commodore Angie Frausto! Congratulations Angie! She will be behind the bar for the upcoming

Parade of Frights serving up delicious Spooky Mimosas and Bloody BLOODY Mary’s! Frightfully

good!

As the bar continues to evolve in new ways we also wanted to say a big Thank You to all those

who have been so incredibly supportive of the new changes. It has been an overwhelmingly

positive experience and a joy to have met so many of our members willing to chip in for the bar.

Or should I say “popcorn” in for the bar! A big thank you is also owed to Patrick Salamunovich

for allowing us to use his awesome old fashioned popcorn machine. The wafting smell of hot

buttered popcorn now fills the air each time the bar is open and our members have been

enjoying the salty treat ever since it was brought through the doors.

Our treasurer Marshall Murphy kindly let me know the other day that the bar has hit new

record high’s in sales, and we couldn’t be more proud. We look forward to having our doors

open more often in the coming year as we get more new faces behind the bar. Looking forward

to setting sail for more new adventures to come!

FROM THE VICE COMMODORE

I love a good dive bar. I enjoy the familiarity of being known by likeminded people. There is something about the lack of pretense that I truly enjoy. A good drink, a good friend, a story or two told. This is a good thing. I can come in whatever clothing is comfortable. The barkeep knows my name and knows what I enjoy.

I heard a description of AYC as the “dive bar of yacht clubs”. I like that. I like that a lot.

AYC is not a typical yacht club. Let’s face it, the whole idea of a “Yacht Club” implies a sense of formality that we have happily eluded. No, we don’t wear blue blazers, have club ties, and all of the nonsense that goes with that. We are an inclusive group of people that love boats. We share that interest and are welcoming to people like me that see the association as a reason to gather. Yes, I do have a blue blazer, but I prefer my comfy shorts, tee shirt (that may have been drenched with salt water from a wayward swell), and deck shoes. And I sense that the rest of us feel the same way.

We are not bougie. We are not pretentious. We are AYC. And we are a welcoming place that is open to people that love boats.

Fair Winds and Following Seas!
